The 100,000-year-old workshop is the earliest example of an art studio.

  • The findings show how red pigment ochre was used.
  • Two separate tool kits for working ochre were found at the site.
  • The findings represents an important benchmark in the evolution of complex human mental processes.

A tiny cave on the South African coast has yielded the earliest evidence of an artist’s studio — a processing workshop where a liquefied ochre-rich mixture was produced 100,000 years ago.

Christopher Henshilwood from the Institute for Human Evolution at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and colleagues found the ochre-rich mixture stored in two abalone shells at Blombos Cave on the southern Cape Coast, east of Cape Town, South Africa. Continue reading

There are three scenarios under which some compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) may affect emotions. CFL bulbs contain mercury. If a bulb breaks and the mercury inside the bulb enters the body, mercury poisoning can affect the emotions. Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by some CFLs may affect emotions. Panic disorder patients report that CFL lighting is a trigger for panic attacks.

  1. What Emotions are Affected by CFLs?

    • The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) report that the only scientifically valid link between EMF exposure and health is the link between EMFs and childhood leukemia. In spite of this, many people and some scientists, including Dr. Magda Havas of Trent University in Ontario, Canada, believe that EMFs can cause anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, irritability and a host of physical illnesses.

Guidelines for Limiting Exposure to EMFs

    • The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)-a non-governmental organization in official relations with WHO-have set voluntary guidelines for limiting exposure to high levels of EMFs because of the leukemia connection.

WHO and ICNIRP say that although some studies have shown a link between EMF and emotions or other physical symptoms, researchers have been unable to replicate those findings in other studies, therefore, there is no proof of a link. As a result, they have not set limits on exposure to chronic low-level EMFs from sources such as fluorescent lighting.

WHO recommends continued study, limiting daily exposure if possible, and following the voluntary guidelines. Continue reading

EVERY politician has access to this, and they abuse it regularly. Yet Silvio is coming under fire by the mainstream.  Hmm… could this be the result of yet another puppet, not doing as he’s told?

Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister, has been named in a US government report on people trafficking as a result of his alleged relationship with ‘Ruby the Heart Stealer’.

Mr Berlusconi, 75, is accused of having sexual relations with belly dancer Karima El Mahroug at one of the evenings he hosted at his lavish villa and at the time she was just 17 years old.

Miss El Mahroug was one of 33 women who attended the parties and at which it is claimed – among other things – that they dressed as nuns and police officers to perform seductive pole dances and stripteases.

It has now emerged Mr Berlusconi was named in this year’s State Department’s Trafficking in Persons 2011 report which details the parties and describes how one of the guests was a minor. Continue reading

The Easter Island Statue Project (EISP) is a private research program and archive created by Jo Anne Van Tilburg, Principle Investigator and EISP founder and director, with Cristián Arévalo Pakarati, Rapa Nui artist and co-director of EISP.  The profound and immediate need for conservation actions on the moai became apparent over the course of more than 20 years of subjective observation and field experience acquired by us during our island-wide archaeological survey, which was conducted in association with our Chilean and Rapa Nui colleagues. The powerful stellar winds of this nebula, located in the constellation of Sagittarius, generate waves 100 billion kilometers high. The waves are caused by supersonic shocks, formed when the local gas is compressed and heated in front of the rapidly expanding lobes. The atoms caught in the shock emit the spectacular radiation seen here. Continue reading

New-age commandos with high-end weapons for NSG

Gurgaon: The country’s elite NSG has embarked on an ambitious project to prepare new-age commandos equipped with high-end weapons to undertake specialised counter- terrorism and counter-hijack operations through land, air and water.

The force, known as the ‘black cats’, will churn out close to 2,000 commandos by 2015-16. They will be completely independent to operate in a hostile environment with the help of artificial intelligence gadgets being developed for them indigenously by DRDO and other premier organisations.

“The National Security Guard is now on the verge of a quantum jump. We have set our plans to prepare a modern commando. A five-year plan has been activated. It primarily concentrates on the commando…a commando who will be independent to operate,” NSG DG R K Medhekar said.

He was talking to reporters on the occasion of NSG’s Raising Day at Manesar garrison here.

The plan has been made keeping in mind that a commando should be independent when he operates…his weapon, his body armour, communication devices, body wearable computer. Water and food should be with him on his body. Some elements in this regard are already under trial and we hope to get the first batch of such new age commandos by 2015-16, Medhekar said.
